Research in the NHS is a vital to provide the evidence we need to transform services and improve outcomes and quality of care for patients. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, clinical research provided a beacon of hope and highlighted the vital role that research plays in improving healthcare for everyone.
National Institute for Health Research
Teldoc PCN work closely with colleagues from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) which is the research arm of the NHS. Working with the NIHR means we can offer our patients high quality, innovate and exciting research opportunities.
Teldoc PCN have been accredited to the Royal College of GP’s ‘Research Ready’ programme, which means that all our research activity complies with the UK Research Governance Framework’s legal, ethical, professional and patient safety requirements.
What is Primary Care Research?
Primary care research focuses on things such as:
- Promoting a healthier lifestyle
- Disease diagnosis and prevention
- Management of long-term illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension
- Prevention of future ill-health
- Treating common conditions such as tonsillitis or influenza
What are the benefits of Primary Care Research?
Through participating in research, Teldoc PCN can:
- Offer patients the opportunity to access new medications and treatments
- Explore new and innovate ways of working and engaging with patients.
- Offer patients the opportunity for patients to contribute to the general research effort to test discoveries that will help future generations.
- Increase the skills and expertise of staff working at Teldoc PCN
How can you take part?
There are various ways you can get involved with research:
- A doctor or nurse may talk to you about a particular study that you might be eligible for
- You may be sent information through the post/text message if you are an eligible to participate.
- You may read information about a current study in the patient waiting room or on the website and wish to take part. In this case, please speak to your doctor or nurse.

Important information about taking part in research:
- Please remember, you are under no obligation to participate in any research study.
- Your participation is entirely voluntary and can be withdrawn by yourself at any time without needing to give any explanation.
- The care and treatment you receive from Teldoc PCN will not be affected in any way if you choose not to take part in a research study.
You will always receive clear information about what taking part in a research study would involve. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and obtain further details about a study.

HIPPOCRATES (HPOS)
HPOS is a study of patients with psoriasis running across Europe.
Led by a research team at University of Oxford and University College Dublin we are aiming to identify patients at risk of developing psoriatic arthritis. This is part of a large research project investigating psoriatic arthritis across Europe which is called HIPPOCRATES.
MyMelanoma
MyMelanoma is a partnership between people who have been affected by melanoma, clinicians and researchers to form the largest melanoma research study in the world.
MyMelanoma is designed to answer the most important unanswered questions in melanoma research.
MyMelanoma is open to anyone who has ever been diagnosed with a melanoma of the skin, of the mucosal surfaces (e.g. nose, genitals) or under the nails

DaRe2think
DaRe2think is a trial for patients who have been diagnosed with/or have previously had atrial fibrillation (AF). Patients with AF have a higher risk of stroke, blood clots and dementia. The aim of the study is to understand if giving newer blood thinning medication earlier reduces this risk for patients.
Teldoc will contact you if you are eligible to participate in the trial. If you do wish to participate, you will not need extra visits to the practice, instead you will be sent a questionnaire to complete every 6 months which can be done on your mobile phone or via any internet connected device.
Discover Me
Coming soon! Discover Me is a nationwide study looking at how health and genetic information can allow us to better understand disease. Anyone over the age of 18 can participate. You may shortly receive a text message from Teldoc with information about the study and links to how you can participate.
PREVAIL
Coming soon! PREVAIL is a study which is looking to understand the effectiveness of a new quality improvement programme called CONQUEST. CONQUEST is a quality improvement programme designed for GP practices, which seeks to improve the outcomes for patients with diagnosed and undiagnosed COPD, through targeted risk-based treatment.
Patients can benefit from earlier diagnosis, optimal treatment to reduce exacerbations and improve control and quality of life and reduce the need for repeat steroid and antibiotics.
